Wouldn’t buying products from local producers be better for the environment than shipping them from Queensland, Australia?

ONE Group is committed to leaving as small a “footprint” as possible on our beloved planet. That’s why we’re a Carbon Neutral company. Producing anything involves some carbon emissions. For example, there are 52 transport & process stages in a single bottle of ketchup. We can only avoid this if we live on our own land, eat only what grows there and produce all our own soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste and everything else we use daily just from things we can carry ourselves. But most people can only daydream of such a life. What we can do is make sure the companies we buy from are Carbon Neutral. So to answer your question:  buying from a local producer that isn’t Carbon Neutral isn't as good as buying from ONE Group. In fact, buying from us could actually be much better for the environment. But having said that, ONE Group does look forward to the day when international demand for our products allows us to build production facilities in other countries besides Australia.

What exactly does it mean to be Carbon Neutral?

It means ONE Group calculates exactly how much fossil fuel we use in every aspect of the development, production and shipping of every product we sell—from the farm & laboratory right to your door—and effectively subtracts our total carbon emissions by purchasing “carbon offsets,” measured in tons of CO2-equivalents. By purchasing “carbon offsets” from reforestation projects (which reabsorb carbon from the atmosphere) equal to our total carbon emissions, ONE Group is able to achieve a net result of zero emissions. This enables you to buy the very best personal care products without fear of harming the environment.

Why are some products "Certified Organic" & some just "Organic"?

Most of our products have been certified organic to organic food industry standards. This means they have 95% certified organic ingredients with the remaining 5% being natural, not synthetic. But some of our products contain more than 5% natural minerals, such as natural ochre in our lip creams or sodium bicarbonate in our toothpaste & deodorant. We work to organic food industry standards because there are no cosmetic or skin care standards stringent enough. But naturally occurring minerals cannot be certified organic, for even though they aren’t synthetic, they aren’t "agricultural ingredients" either. So any of our products with more than 5% non-agricultural ingredients specify that they have 80% certified organic ingredients, for example. The only exceptions to this is our shampoo and body wash. The foaming agent in these 2 products is not certified organic and makes up about 27% of the product.

Why do you use polyglucose in your shampoo and body wash?

The foaming agent we use is polyglucose, a "non-ionic surfactant" synthesized from coconut and corn. Polyglucose has excellent dermatological compatibility. Based on the Duhring Chamber Test, it has the lowest irritation score of all common surfactants tested. It is free from ethylene oxide, which can cause nitrosamine contamination, and free from preservatives. It also has a very low environmental impact due to its

  • High bio-degradability - it breaks down readily
  • High eco-toxicological compatibility - it doesn't harm the environment if released

In addition, polyglucose is manufactured from completely renewable vegetable raw materials. It is very good, however it is still not certified organic. We will do better. We are working on replacing it with a certified organic "foaming agent" of similar functionality, but it takes time. Rest assured that as soon as we have a certified organic replacement that works, we will introduce it.

What are the properties of the proprietary herbal extract blend in your products?
We use a unique blend of aqueous extracts obtained from native Australian certified organic flora as a base for all of our products. It's properties are soothing, healing, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral & immuno-stimulant. It’s entirely safe, non-toxic and non-irritant.

I'm a vegan. Do you have to use beeswax in your products?

We use certified organic beeswax in our lip balm and moisturisers. While there are vegetable waxes that could quite adequately do the job, none are available in certified organic form. So unfortunately we can’t do without it and meet our certified organic requirement.

Conventional beekeeping is understandably disturbing to vegans, but there’s a vast difference between "mass-production" beekeeping and organic beekeeping. Conventional beekeeping involves:

  • transportation often resulting in stress, suffocation, overheating or freezing of the bees
  • artificial feeding regimes
  • feeding of artificial pollen substitutes and white sugar syrup
  • genetic manipulation
  • artificial insemination
  • wing clipping and the use of artificial pheromones to prevent the queen bee from leaving
  • synthetic pesticides and antibiotics to combat pests

By contrast, our apiarist says our bees:

  • are not hurt in any way by our farming or harvesting methods
  • gather honey from nearby organic eucalyptus forests
  • eat their honey (it’s their food) so we take only surplus honey, always leaving enough to keep our bees happy and healthy
  • use their wax to cap the hives protectively and keep the honey fresh, so when we harvest, we take only the wax cap off the hive, returning the rest of the comb to the hive
  • are never subjected to either cruelty or artificial manipulation

Organic agriculture is a better way of doing things, and we wish to support those farmers who are doing the right thing for our planet.

  How do you pronounce miessence®?

The correct pronunciation of miessence® is “MY–ESSENCE”.

  top of page

Why do some of the miessence® products contain alcohol?

Herbs and flowers are the core of miessence® Skin and Personal Care formulations and alcohol is used to extract plant materials. The alcohol used is of the highest food quality standard-primarily derived from fruits, potatoes and occasionally grain. The percentage of alcohol used does not approach a concentration that would be considered harmful in any way; it is not drying to the skin. Alcohol carries active plant extracts into the skin. A natural emulsifier and stabilizer; alcohol acts as a preservative.

ONE Group founding director Narelle Chenery's story:

While I was completing a Bachelor of Applied Science in  Information Management in 1992, a friend introduced me  to a new natural skin care range on the market. The  company prided itself on producing the best products from “science and Nature." They talked a lot about their good ingredients, but didn't say much about the bad ones...
